In a powerful demonstration of youth activism and community collaboration, young artists from the Stop the Hate in Youth Empowerment program recently completed a meaningful mural project at Locale Eatery in downtown Bakersfield. This initiative not only beautified a local business but provided valuable creative experience for participating youth while spreading a message of unity and resilience.

A Canvas for Change: The Polaroid Mural Project

The mural features three distinct Polaroid frames, each containing artwork designed by local youth that symbolizes different aspects of combating hate and building community resilience. For many participants, this project marked their first experience designing and completing a large-scale public art installation.

The Symbolism Behind the Art

Each Polaroid frame in the mural represents a key concept in breaking cycles of hate:

1. Growth & Transformation

The first Polaroid illustrates personal resilience through imagery of flowers growing from hair. Whenever someone goes through a hard time, often times they resort to changing their hair. We send love to those who heal siliently and hope they know they are support systems waiting to help. This powerful visual metaphor connects directly to the Stop the Hate program's mission of supporting healing for victims of discrimination through creative expression.

2. Community Solidarity

In the second frame, artists created imagery that bridges diverse cultural symbols, representing the strength found in various community connections. This element reflects how the Stop the Hate initiative brings together organizations serving different ethnicities, races, and language communities to support one another.

3. Environmental Change

The third Polaroid depicts transformation of environments, showing florals breaking through barriers. This imagery parallels the program's goal of converting harmful social environments into spaces where acceptance flourishes, highlighting the importance of alliance-building in creating lasting change.

Youth Development Through Artistic Collaboration

The mural project embodies several core elements of the Stop the Hate program's approach to youth development:

  • Amplifying Youth Voices: Participants gained agency by expressing their experiences and visions for a hate-free community

  • Modeling Inclusive Collaboration: The project created space for diverse ideas to be respected and incorporated

  • Demonstrating Art as Activism: Youth learned that creative expression can be a powerful tool for addressing difficult social issues

A Community Partnership

This project represents a successful collaboration between multiple community organizations

  • Downtown Bakersfield

  • Stop the Hate in Youth Empowerment program

  • Locale Eatery Bakersfield

Such partnerships demonstrate how businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations can work together to support youth development while addressing important social issues.

The Impact Beyond the Wall

While the mural now stands as a beautiful addition to downtown Bakersfield, its impact extends far beyond aesthetics. For participating youth, the experience of conceptualizing, designing, and completing this public art installation has provided valuable skills and confidence that will serve them in future endeavors.

More importantly, the mural serves as a daily reminder to community members that transformation is possible—both personally and collectively—and that art can play a significant role in creating the inclusive, accepting society we wish to build.

The Stop the Hate in Youth Empowerment program is dedicated to empowering Kern County youth through creative expression and community engagement.
